DC side protection

Solar DCDB box

A solar DCDB box combines the DC strings coming from the panels and protects them before the current reaches the inverter. JS Electrical builds DCDB boxes for string counts from one in one out upward.

What a solar DCDB box does

Panels are wired into strings, and each string carries a fuse or DC MCB that protects the wiring if a fault develops. The DCDB brings these strings together, holds the surge protection device that absorbs a lightning strike or induced surge on the array wiring, and hands off a single protected DC feed to the inverter.

Where it is used

Rooftop residential and commercial installations, ground-mount plants, and any array with more than one string that needs to be combined and protected before the inverter, from a 3kW single-string home system to a larger multi-string commercial array. Usually paired with a matching ACDB box on the output side and an earthing kit for the array structure.

Frequently asked questions

How many strings can a DCDB handle?

We build DCDBs from a single 1 in 1 out configuration up to multi-string boxes. Tell us your string count and we will confirm the layout.

How much does a solar DCDB box cost?

Price depends on the string count, voltage and enclosure size. Tell us your system size, for example a DCDB box for a 3kW or 5kW solar system, and we will quote a price for the quantity you need.

Does the DCDB include surge protection?

Yes, our standard DCDB boxes include a Type 2 DC surge protection device. Higher protection classes are available on request.

Can the DCDB and ACDB be supplied as a matched pair?

Yes, most orders are for a matched ACDB and DCDB pair sized to the same inverter and array. Send both requirements together for one quote.
